Kim is currently a full-time Reading Interventionist & utilizes the extremely effective Orton-Gillingham Approach with her students.
Instead of starting out with remedial instruction (which can make students feel like they’re stuck in their past failures), we go ALL IN on the student’s current unit and use best practices to make sure they understand everything they’re learning in that particular chapter.
As Math, Science, and Spanish are cumulative in nature, any prior gaps in the student’s understanding will inevitably resurface in the current content. We provide remediation as it relates to the current content so they simultaneously strengthen their previous weaknesses while continuing to move forward.
After just a few weeks of this approach, the student gains enough momentum and content understanding that we’re able to cover the current content in less time, enabling us to then pre-teach the next section(s) in order for them to consistently be ahead.

Students tend to really like this approach because they feel like they have an edge when they’re in class since
they already understand the new lesson. We’ve had various students tell us they end up teaching their peers
the lesson because of how well they understand it. This provides students with the confidence boost they need!
